N2 - The purpose of this research was to gain a baseline understanding of an engineering program's current culture to inform the progress towards the goal of transforming the culture. This study explored the evolution of an engineering program at a very high research activity university over the course of 15 years. Participants included 13 faculty members involved with the program over the time period of interest. Using Schein's organizational cultural framework and an experienced-centered narrative approach, we focused on the interplay of the experiences of individuals within the program and the larger sociocultural forces. Multiple themes emerged from this qualitative analysis including leadership, process of acculturation, and evolving culture. Implications of this work include the importance of leadership and strategies for acculturation of faculty into a department or program, especially at critical points in an organization's development.
