Abstract

After a description of the chemistry and mineralogy of Martian soil, the composition of the Martian regolith is considered (minerals of igneous rocks in the regolith, clay minerals, iron oxides and hydroxides, salts and water). Ancient and present-day weathering is discussed, and the chapter concludes with thermodynamic calculations of the mineral composition of the Martian regolith.-J.M.H.
