Abstract
It has been demonstrated that algae have the potential to be useful in treatment processes for the removal of toxic organic compounds. One objective of this paper is to present a summary of the existing evidence for the potential for algae to remove these hazardous organic compounds from water. Mechanisms for removal include accumulation and degradation, including both transformation and mineralization. The second objective is to describe the types of problems that must be overcome before algae can be used in treatment processes. These problems include lack of information on reaction kinetics and products, and the lack of suitable reactors.
