Abstract
The concept that subatomic particles can be put together in various different forms to get different materials, is discussed. Whether the behaviour of different materials can be derived from the known laws of physics applied to individual constituents is still disputed. A new factor that could shed light on this most fundamental question is cosmology. Evolution of complex systems are computationally intractable, their evolution might be determined by the behavior of their components, but predictive calculations are exponentially hard.
