Abstract
The ever-present need for low-cost housing is pressing the booming interest in construction materials that are created with minimal harm to the environment, the so-called sustainable design trend. One solution is papercrete created from waste paper, cement and such ingredients as sand, fly ash, and Styrofoam. Now, experiments conducted by Arizona State University's Center for Alternative Building Studies (CABS) are helping to define and verify the structural performance characteristics, enabling builders to use the material with greater confidence.
