Problematics of class and gender intersect in the crossdressing heroines of medieval romance. Silence can be read as an alternate version of the high medieval disinherited younger son, the juvenis, supporting Marjorie Garber's claim that the crossdresser often represents displaced anxieties about categories other than gender.
