Abstract

We have shown that pressure and sample pretreatment play important roles in the oscillatory behavior of CO oxidation over Pt. The influence of these variables had not previously been documented. The use of FTIR-RAS has made it possible to monitor some surface species such as SiO and CO. We have presented evidence for the formation of silica on the Pt surface as a result of 'cleaning' procedures. The amount of CO which can adsorb onto the surface at maximum coverage increases with increasing silicon oxide level. These observations are consistent with clustering of the oxide during the low reaction-rate branch of the oscillation cycle.
