Sub-millimeter wave low-profile imaging modules (SLIMs)

Abstract

We propose a compact, low profile imaging array for active imaging applications and focused illumination capability. As such, the object scene is illuminated and imaged by the same array. The new topology allows for the implementation of densely packed, large-format sensors that operate in the millimeter (mmW) and sub-mmW region. RF sources, antennas, and ultra-fast detectors are integrated on a single wafer substrate and with the help of RF switches the array can produce real-time images. This planar active imaging sensor is compatible with low profile portable electronics and can be particularly useful for near field imaging applications where bulky focusing elements are not necessary.
