Due to the complex structure of tire, some special attentions should be paid to the method of experimental modal analysis on tires. In this paper investigations on various problems related to the technique of experimental modal analysis on tires have been carried out. Based on this research, experimental modal analysis on two kinds of tires with different characteristics is performed. The manner of tire suspension is studied. The results obtained under different excitation manners and excitation signals are compared in order to enhance the signal to noise ratio. The same test data are processed using frequency domain modal analysis and time domain ARMAX technique, respectively. Very close results have been obtained. The results show that the obtained modal parameters are in accordance with the physical properties of these two kinds of tires, and they can represent the characteristics of the tires. As to the authors' knowledge, the modal damping ratios of tires obtained in this experimental study have not been found in the literature. The modal parameters acquired in this study possess practical values for the description of mechanical properties of tires.
