Abstract
The paper describes a statistical procedure for determining the flashover probability of insulator chains at different voltages as a function of the pollution level and shows the effect of connecting insulators in parallel in a line. It also provides calculation methods to combine the flashover probability curve and the measured contamination level distribution curve, the results of which give the risk of failure of a line at different voltages. With the selection of the acceptable risk of failure, the new computerized method offers a more accurate design of transmission line insulation in polluted areas. The data for this calculation are based on a contamination survey, which gives the chemical composition of the contaminant, the probability of occurrence of a contamination level and its distribution probability, and on laboratory tests which give the 50% flashover voltage of the insulators together with the standard deviation of the measurements.
