Abstract

Released in 2016, Star Trek Beyond is the third feature film in the franchise’s reboot (alternate universe) series, written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung and directed by Justin Lin. STB continues three years after the beginning of the five-year mission where Star Trek Into Darkness left off. The Enterprise is destroyed by a swarm of alien ships led by Krall, a former Starfleet officer who now hates the Federation and is seeking to destroy it with a bioweapon artefact he takes from Kirk. With the help of the alien Jaylah, Kirk and crew escape from their captors and pursue Krall to the starbase Yorktown for the final showdown. The film is heavy on action sequences and introspection about the meaning of it all as Kirk and crew ponder their place and their futures in the Federation, and their ongoing mission.
