Abstract

College and professional football and basketball are areas in American life where there is supposedly a Black–White win–win. Black athletes gain fame and fortune, and White fans enjoy extraordinary athletic contests. Scott Brooks and colleagues provide a case study of the racism undermining this win–win, which illustrates how cultural racism is deplored and has effects on Whites. They show not only what happens to Black athletes who get out of line, but also what happens to White staff and faculty who side with the Black athletes or who get in the way of their punishment. Suppression of Black protest is costly to Whites as well.
