Photoproduct scavengers which increase photolysis yield of liberated amine:Photochemical reactions are frequently used in heteropolymer synthesis (DNA, peptides, other heteropolymer), release of chemicals, or modification of surfaces, often generating a free amine group for use in subsequent reactions. This process is very useful as it can be patterned in time and space with light, allowing precise control over chemical properties in all four dimensions. An example of an application is light directed peptide array synthesis (analogous to light directed oligonucleotide synthesis). A major problem with this approach has been a relatively low yield of the reactive free amine upon photocleavage. A significant fraction of the yield loss is due to reactions between the free amine and the products of the photocleavage reaction. We have developed scavenging molecules that remove the roducts of the photocleavage reaxtion before they can react with the free amines.
