Abstract

Resilience refers broadly to successful adaptation to adversity. Yet much nuance of what it means to be resilient fails to be captured by a definition of such wide scope. One may act resiliently (implying resilience processes in seeking adaptation) and one may also be resilient (implying outcomes of resilience). In this roadmap to resilience, we will describe resilience in terms of its functions as process and outcome, as well as the various levels, methods, and contexts in which it can be studied. Representative studies from resilience literature will be introduced to clarify fundamental concepts and link those concepts to health and well-being.
