Reliability of photovoltaic modules: An overview

Abstract

The photovoltaic (PV) industry has experienced a fast growth over the last decade, and this trend is expected to even accelerate in the next 10-20 years. While more manufacturers and new technologies are emerging, the reliability of solar modules becomes a critical performance measure for the success of this industry. Current conventional qualification testing methods are inadequate in determining reliability and predicting lifetime of PV modules. This paper provides an overview on the inadequacy of the reliability testing methods in the present PV industry, and identifies several future research directions that could help quantifying reliability prediction of solar modules.
