Addressing the need for a comprehensive, system- oriented understanding of US technical laboratories the authors set out to develop and test a new typology for the analysis of the R&D laboratory community. The environmental context taxonomy gives the analyst an insight into actual variations among R&D labs as well as the effects of particular forces on this structure and behavior. As a result a number of new laboratory types were identified.
