Smart grid is an umbrella term for the modernization of electricity delivery systems with enhanced monitoring, analysis, control, and communication capabilities in order to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of electricity services. The modernization happens at both the high-voltage (HV) transmission and the medium-or low-voltage (MV/LV) distribution grids and has a diverse set of goals, including facilitating greater competition between providers, encouraging greater use of alternative energy sources, implementing the automation and monitoring capabilities needed for bulk transmission, and enabling the use of market forces to drive energy conservation.
