Abstract
This paper addresses the positive sequence modeling of a converter-interfaced synchronous generator for use in large scale grid simulations. With the increased penetration of wind and solar energy and the projected increase in energy from natural gas and hydro turbines, availability of a mathematical model representing a converter-interfaced synchronous generator in positive sequence simulations is essential. Such models are not currently available in commercial software packages. The importance of modeling the source behind the inverter due to practical limitations on the size of the dc bus capacitor is emphasized. In addition, it will be shown that there is a nominal increase in simulation time, in evaluating the transient stability of large systems using this model.
