Abstract
The primary concern of this paper is the current decline of bus patronage both in developed and developing countries. The paper explores some of the reasons for declining transit patronage that are not related to transit service per se, but to other issues. It is argued that reversals in the sociological trend of ridership decline require that transit project a positive image. A case study from S Africa is used to illustrate the image problem. -Author
