Abstract

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of crystals consisting largely of C₆₀ molecules ("buckminsterfullerene") show that they form close-packed arrays. Domains containing closed-cage structural relatives of C₆₀ ("fullerenes") that are both smaller and significantly larger than C₆₀ are evident. The larger fullerenes have the projected shapes of elongated ellipsoids, some of which we estimate to contain over 100 carbon atoms.
