Abstract
The oxidation states of copper in lead borate glass, 2PbO·B2O3, have been studied by quantitative optical spectroscopy. Cu(II) in lead borate glass shows a single absorption band centred at 13 800 cm-1 (ε = 48 l cm-1 mol-1). This band is assigned to Cu(II) in 6-coordination. Using the Cu(II) spectra as standards, we determined the copper oxidation states in lead borate glasses doped with YBa2Cu3Ox and Cu2O. Copper dissolved from YBa2Cu3Ox in air has an oxidation state of Cu(II), while copper dissolved from Cu2O in argon is Cu(I). The lead borate glass itself shows slightly different optical spectra when prepared under different atmospheres. These differences may be related to small amounts of polyvalent lead, which increase with increasing oxygen fugacity, and to the presence of small amounts of a crystalline phase in the glass prepared under oxygen.
