On Cuba: Intertextuality as Différance in Julieta Campos' El miedo de perder a Eurídice; A Symptomatic Case of Latin American Postmodernism

Abstract

The metonymic pole includes: repetition, montage, pastiche, and surrealist associations leading to écriture féminine, the metaphoric pole aligns: self–referentiality, paradox, parody and Chinese boxes. The stylistic impact of the 'metaphoric' and 'metonymic poles:' "the primacy of the metaphoric process in the literary schools of Romanticism and symbolism has repeatedly acknowledged. In sum, granting différance at the semiological level of language, and the social inscription of discourse in the novel, Campos' El miedo de perder a Eurídice stages intertextuality as différance through the constant play between difference and deferral engendered by the paratactical articulation of the devices provisionally aligned with the metonymic and metaphoric poles, namely: repetition, montage, pastiche, and surreal associations leading to écriture féminine and self-referentiality, paradox, parody and Chinese boxes. The Model of Appropriation Subercaseaux distinguishes three matrixes: According to prevalent ideology in the Caribbean and Central America, development of culture and thought is contingent upon structural change.
