Abstract
A report is presented of features in the Brillouin spectra of PS (polystyrene) and PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) which the authors believe to be due to SWS. In PS they find these features to be weaker than those reported by J. K. Kruger et al. The shear wave linewidths are resolved, but a serious study of the relative widths of the longitudinal and shear linewidths in the glassy polymer awaits measurements with a better signal-to-noise ratio obtained at higher laser powers. The authors have demonstrated the feasibility of detecting SWS by Brillouin scattering in polymers known to be weak scatterers.
