N2 - Physical inactivity is increasingly recognized as a public health problem due to the increased risks for chronic diseases and disabling physical conditions that limit movement and mobility in adults. During the past 15 years, public health activities have focused on understanding factors that influence physical activity behaviors and in identifying ways to minimize physical inactivity. Efforts have focused on conducting physical activity surveillance systems, evaluating policies related to active lifestyles, and sponsoring research studies to understand how coordinated multidisciplinary approaches can reduce physical inactivity in communities. Population demographics associated with an aging society provide opportunities for federal and local agencies and organizations to identify effective ways for adults to remain physically active on a regular basis.
