Abstract
Some of the developments in the field of cell analysis with the use of microfluidics are discussed. Microfluidic or lab-on-a-chip systems offer a high potential for the integration of several if not even all necessary experimental techniques for cellular analysis. Standard separations of biologically important analytes, such as DNA or proteins, can rapidly be performed in the microchip format. Parallelization allows for high-throughput applications and standard sensitive detection techniques can be directly incorporated in or coupled to the microfluidic devices. The integration of cell handling and analysis techniques to the microfluidic format has become a field of intense investigations. Organization of cells in specially designed traps or arrays allows for massive parallelization of cellular studies.
