Abstract

A negative differential device is made using a molecule with potential-dependent conductance attached between electrodes hled at a potential where the molecule shows a large conductance. Application of a potential difference between the two electrodes alters the potential of the molecule, causing it to change to a less conducting form. This results in reproducible negative differential resistance, a basis for switches, oscillators, amplifiers and logic elements. The NDR can occur at low bias and is highly reproducible, greatly simplifying device design.
