Abstract
The statistical description of structure in turbulent flow is a central problem in the study of turbulent motion. In this paper the authors shall review the principles and applications of stochastic estimation briefly, and then present the results of various investigations as they pertain to the structure of shear flow turbulence. The results support a picture in which vortex rings and/or hairpin vortices dominate in the outer layer, whereas structures elongated in the streamwise direction and possessing vorticity in the streamwise direction dominate the wall layer.
