Integrating complex systems study into the freshmen mechanical engineering experience

A course for engineering students to address the change from a simple systems approach to a more complex systems approach by including biology in an engineering course is described. The student's comments concerning the ways that this approach can help them in their engineering education and career is also analyzed. Possible ways to integrate biology into other courses throughout the mechanical engineering curriculum were also discussed. This complex systems oriented method of educating the engineers not only covers the technical aspects of a system, but the economic, social, cultural, global, and environmental aspects as well.
