N2 - Most trenchless pipeline construction projects are currently delivered using the traditional design-bid-build (DBB) system. DBB is a sequential process that often leads to inefficiencies; therefore, alternative project delivery methods (APDM) have been developed to increase stakeholder integration and ultimately enhance project performance. The complex nature of trenchless construction projects renders them ideal candidates for APDM because of the lack of technical knowledge exchange traditionally seen between the engineers and contractors. APDM can be used to bridge this gap by enabling the contractors to provide knowledge and insights early in the design of trenchless projects, which can introduce numerous benefits over traditional DBB delivery. Numerous APDMs are in use today, including design-build, construction management at risk, and integrated project delivery. APDMs are continuing to gain popularity in the design and construction industries due their documented ability to improve project performance, specifically with respect to project cost and schedule. However, the use of APDM has not yet gained significant popularity in trenchless projects. This paper presents industry perceptions on the potential benefits APDM can offer trenchless construction projects and specifically discusses performance areas that are likely to be affected by the use of APDM.
