Hollow metallic microspheres produced by spark erosion

The synthesis of hollow metallic microspheres of Ni, CoFe, the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni 49Mn 30Ga 21, and the giant magnetostrictive alloy Fe 83Ga 17, by spark erosion using liquid nitrogen as the dielectric liquid was analyzed. The cross-sectional structure of the microspheres was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that the wall thickness of the hollow particles was depended on the elemental composition of the particles. It was also observed that the particles prepared in liquid argon exhibited negligible porosity, while the particles prepared in liquid nitrogen were hollow.
