Abstract
Protecting individual privacy and the public's health are critical objectives in a national health infrastructure that increasingly exchanges electronic health data. Neither goal can be neglected because privacy and public health are synergistic. Individuals rely on public health authorities to protect communal health; public health officials rely on timely and accurate individual health data that is facilitated through strong privacy protections.
