Flexible electrophoretic ink display technology development for a rugged PDA application

Abstract

The Flexible Display Center (FDC) at Arizona State University is working to advance flexible display technology through development of field testable flexible display technology demonstrators (TDs), with simultaneous development of the toolsets and processes to ensure that these TDs are manufacturable. Our first fieldable TD will be a low power, rugged personal digital assistant (R-PDA) built with an active matrix 3.8" diagonal QVGA electrophoretic display. The a-Si backplane on flexible stainless steel is designed, fabricated, and tested in-house and then integrated with E Ink Corporation's electrophoretic frontplane technology. Display panel assembly, test, and product integration are completed with E Ink and integration partners. This paper overviews the Center's progress in the following critical steps in development of this R-PDA: (i) Pilot Line qualification of our low temperature a-Si process on rigid substrates; (ii) process transfer to flexible stainless steel substrates; (iii) form factor scale-up; and (iv) module assembly and test.
