Abstract
Assessing the viability of an algae-based business or algal technology requires understanding the inter-relationships between technology and economics. This has been termed techno-economic analysis (TEA) and is a set of methods for quantifying the profit or loss potential of a firm based on the underlying technology used by the firm. This chapter provides a framework for analysis and guides readers through the essential elements of constructing a best practice TEA. The chapter presents the underlying economic framework used in TEA, and then details the construction of a TEA for a firm producing Spirulina for nutraceuticals in order to illustrate how to build a TEA and derive the calculations required to assess the profit potential of a firm.
