Abstract
Brings together a wide variety of contributions on Plains-Pueblo relations from prehistory to the 19th century using archaeological and documentary evidence. The papers were originally presented at a conference in New Mexico in 1987, and they explore the diversity of human interactions in terms of trade, intermarriage, warfare and raiding, then attempt to provide possible explanations for changing relationships, including subsistence needs, environmental change, and economic alliances. Through the analysis of historical interactions in this particular area, the book aims to elucidate more general processes of interaction and interdependence among non-hierarchical societies. -P.Hardiman
