Abstract
It is necessary that the Volatile organic compound (VOC) emission rate from wastewater treatment systems be estimated based on fundamentals of all the mechanisms, the actual plant operational data, and the actual concentrations of VOCs in the influent wastewaters. This article reports on a study to estimate VOC emission loads from two large publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) in the Chicago area; and to develop, evaluate and apply a simple mathematical model that describes VOC removal in activated sludge treatment systems and determine the role of individual mechanisms and their interactions. The Calumet and West-southwest wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were selected for this study, because both WWTPs receive large shares of the industrial discharges in Chicago and their plant operating and VOC data were available. Study methods and results are discussed.
