A method has been developed to estimate the amount of residual oxygen in the extraction tower headspace following oxygen alkali extraction (Eo). This analysis can be used during the start-up of new Eo systems for rapid feedback relative to operating efficiency. At existing Eo installations, it is a useful tool for control and troubleshooting. Tests conducted at several mills indicate residual oxygen is a function of oxygen dosage, reaction pressure, and retention time in the Eo stage. Temperature and mixing efficiency also affect residual oxygen. The experimental procedure and method of analysis are described in this paper. Carbon monoxide, a byproduct of the Eo reaction, is also measured as a safety consideration. Control of the oxygen and carbon monoxide content in Eo vent gas contributes to the safe and efficient operation of an Eo stage.
