Methods and devices for manipulating molecules and particles using multiple areas of non-uniform electric field regions are described. The method is based on the combined, simultaneous effects of electrophoretic, electroosmotic and dielectrophoretic forces on a particle withink a non-uniform electric field. This interplay between electrophoretic and dielectrophoretic foreces can be exploited for enhanced particle discrimination, separation and concentration compared to that possible by utilizing only one of these forces.
