Abstract

To the Editor: Wiesner et al. are to be congratulated for their innovative study on the use of cyclosporine in early primary biliary cirrhosis (May 17 issue).* However, it is important to point out that although the authors claim that this was a double-blind protocol, the study was not rigorously blinded. Even at low dosages, cyclosporine leads to a significant and noticeable elevation in the arterial blood pressure and serum creatinine level. Hypertrichosis, tremors, and gum hyperplasia also develop in many patients. These features are readily perceived by the patients themselves. In the study by Wiesner et al., 15 of…
