Abstract
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the final three phases of flight-descent, approach, and landing-account for a significant proportion of aircraft accidents. There is a need to enhance the success rates of both the approach and landing phases of flight. One method to reduce the hazards associated with the landing environment, while simultaneously improving safety of flight, is to enhance the final approach path lighting systems. Through an industry and university joint project, supported by the FAA, a comprehensive study of present airport runway lighting systems is being undertaken. This is the first phase of a multi-year project to design, test, and certify improved runway lighting schemes in the United States. In Phase One, the research team addresses existing operational deficiencies through a structured evaluation of current and proposed lighting. This is an important and timely study. It has been over 20 years since such a comprehensive study has been made in the United States, and it is time to take advantage of new and improved lighting technologies to ensure continued aircraft safety.
