Abstract

There are two major hurdles in the fabrication of top cell using polycrystalline films of CdTe alloys. First, the deposition of the films is difficult due to the difference in the vapor pressure of the individual elements present in the alloy or longer process time making it not economical. The retention of the original stoichiometry of the CdTe alloy after the CdCl 2 treatment is the second hurdle. In this work, polycrystalline films of Cd (1-x) Zn x Te (Cd-Zn-Te) were fabricated with different band gaps by co-sublimation of CdTe and Zn. A strategy to retain the composition of the polycrystalline Cd-Zn-Te films is investigated and demonstrated. Quantum efficiency of greater than 0.7 was observed in the fabricated devices and band gap was maintained.
