Abstract
The controversy as to whether the rate of X-ray production or backscattering is proportional to the sum of the intensities of the different excited Bloch waves - the independent Bloch wave model, or to the square of the total wave function - the dependent Bloch wave model is studied showing that the dependent Bloch wave model is correct. The difference, however, between this and the independent model is likely to be observed only in crystals thinner than about one extinction distance. Refs.
