Abstract
Recent research has demonstrated that strategies for engaging in (and detecting) deceptive behavior are specific to the context and content of the target characteristic. The use of generalized bipolar deception scales such as MMPI K and PSI De, which were developed for traditional clinical purposes, are of limited effectiveness in specific forensic situations. This article distinguishes among six different types of deceptiveness related to self- presentation of psychological status, and identifies scales that were developed to assess each type. Examples are given of the application of this extended deception battery.
