Abstract
Ways in which computer-aided process engineering development and design can benefit from improved knowledge-representation schemes and advanced reasoning control strategies are reviewed. The use of artificial intelligence in modelling of physical phenomena and systems in which they occur, information handling and processing systems, and problem- solving strategies in design, operations and control is discussed. The theoretical scope of important contributions from artificial intelligence is outlined together with their past, present and future impact on the formulation and solution of process engineering problems.
