Abstract
The loading of an electric power cable is usually subject to uncertainty. Load factors account for fluctuation in cable load in an inexact way - the actual load is a stochastic process. The analysis presented in this paper treats the load of an electric power cable as a stationary stochastic process with known statistics. The thermodynamics of a single phase cable are described and an optimal cable design is calculated for a given stochastic load. Examples are presented to illustrate the analysis and optimization technique. The result is improved cable performance for the load model used.
