Abstract
Contamination of soil and groundwater continues to be a problem throughout the United States. To solve this problem, horizontal wells are installed beneath buildings or in environmentally sensitive areas to reach contaminants inaccessible by vertical systems. Wells of this type are constructed using horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a remotely guided drilling technique that makes it possible to drill horizontal boreholes over long distances along straight or curved profiles and alignments. The development of design and installation guidelines to help engineers make better decisions on well profile and alignment, down-hole tools, and well materials reduce the risk and increase the likelihood of a successful installation.
