Porous ceramic membrane modification by deposition of solid product from vapor precursor decomposing near the pore mouth is investigated. A mathematical model describing the process is presented and accurate expressions for estimating the pore radius profiles and average pore size as function of time are derived. The kinetics of average pore size change is used to solve the population balance equation in order to predict the modification dynamics of the membrane pore size distribution. These simulation results are in agreement with experimental data of modification of porous Vycor glass and alumina membrane tubes modified by vapor deposition of SiO 2 and Pd.
