Abstract
A reactor system that permits study of adsorbed molecules by Fourier Transform Infrared - Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (FTIR-RAS) has been designed and is used to study the dynamics of adsorbed molecules during CO oxidation on platinum. The reactor cell is operable from UHV to two atmospheres pressure and can be used with a variety of sample geometries. FTIR-RAS allows direct monitoring of adsorbed CO, as well as gas-phase CO//2 during reaction. Other adsorbates, such as oxygen, may also be monitored with proper optics. With FTIR-RAS, various states of CO adsorption can be distinguished, including linear-bonded and bridge-bonded CO, and CO adsorbed on oxidized Pt.
