A three-dimensional model for the introductory teaching of multivariate analysis

The purpose of the model is to provide a medium by which the basics of multivariate analyses, such as linear regression and factor analysis may be presented quickly and clearly to a non-numerate audience. The emphasis is kept firmly upon the graphical solution throughout the paper. Firstly, a simple vibariate regression example is introduced, and this is then extended to the multivariate case. A photograph of the fitting of the regression plane is included. The data used within this exercise are extended into the factoring example, where correlation, factor loadings and rotation are all discussed. Once more, a photograph of the axes is included. As the paper is intended for the non-technical instructor as much as the quantitative instructor requiring a different approach to his subject, a short appendix comprising further data and results for both regression and factor analysis is presented. A plan of the model is also included.
