Abstract
Music performance programs in tertiary institutions strive to prepare future generations of music performers, scholars, and educators. At Arizona State University, the values of each program are constructed by faculty and are interconnected with the values and the mission of the department and the institution. Through an examination of the development and implementation of a Music Entrepreneurship Certificate pioneered by the author, this chapter draws upon personal experiences, student reflections, and conceptual frameworks including entrepreneurial skill sets and entrepreneurial thinking in the context of a music performance degree program. The chapter examines questions such as: How does the study of entrepreneurship help music performance students develop a sustainable career in music? What is the role of faculty and of the institution? This discussion presents challenges and changes that have resulted in fewer fulltime jobs for musicians and envisions a change in the music performance curriculum that better prepares musicians to enter the world as a working artist-musician.
