Directed evolution is an integral process used in any lab involving cellular research. Certain cells are selected by some desired characteristic and bred for research or industrial purposes, while the remaining cells are automatically killed. However, this practice is typically done manually or by an automated continuousflow process. Manual cell selection is relatively slow and has a low throughput, while continuousflow methods allow cells to clump together in the medium, creating a low specificity.
